Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is being adopted in many areas of the world as the next generation of biological water treatment technology. In the last century, MBR technology is well applied in industrial wastewater treatment and now entering the sector of municipal, rural area sewage treatment applications and drinkable water filtration system. It has become an important role to make inroads in filtration solutions.

PRINCIPLE OF THE MBR

In an MBR, ultrafiltration membrane modules are submerged in the activated sludge combining the biological process and the solid- liquid separation into a single process. The quality of the effluent is improved as the membrane acts as a barrier to micro organisms, MBR sewage treatment plants produces treated effluent with less than 5 mg/L BOD, less than 1 mg/L suspended solids, and consistent turbidity of less than 0.5 NTU. The UF treated effluent has a SDI value of less than 5 and can be directly feed to a reverse osmosis system, without additional filtration. The UF will also reduce organic matter and will minimize biological fouling in the downstream reverse osmosis systems, it allows the activiated sludge to become more concentrated and replacing the process of secondary clarifier.

Membrane technology is well equipped to exsiting wastewater treatment plant to enhance the capacity and quality of discharged water.
The world's largest waste treatment plant to use ultrafiltration membrane system is built in Peel, Ontario, Canada. Membranes will replace the original granular media filters that were installed in 1975 . The exisiting settling tanks will be retrofitted to accommodate the installation of membranes equipments. Upon completion this additional installation will increase 45% of the 100.4 million gallons per day treatment capacity for the municipal till 2031.
